August 9 marks six years since the 2020 presidential election — an event that changed the course of Belarusian history forever. To commemorate this anniversary, the Free Belarus Museum is preparing the exhibition “2020: Minsk Speaks” and invites you to become its co-creators.
We want to recreate the atmosphere of that August: the overwhelming sense of solidarity, hope, and the feeling that history was unfolding right here and then—and that we were the very people capable of changing its course.
The white-red-white flags that waved across Belarus became one of the defining symbols of that time. They were carried during marches and protests, displayed from balconies, windows, building facades, and in courtyards. Later, we hid them during police searches, took them with us into exile, and have carefully preserved them ever since as reminders of those extraordinary days.
For our project, “2020: Minsk Speaks,” we are collecting white-red-white flags bearing the names of Minsk’s districts and streets—handmade, hand-sewn, large and small, all different, because each one carries the story of people who were not afraid to stand together and who believed in change.
If you have such a flag—one that was with you in 2020, that you managed to preserve and bring with you into exile—we would be deeply grateful if you entrusted it to the museum. With your help, we can enrich the exhibition with authentic artefacts from this important chapter of our shared history.
You may donate your flag to the museum’s collection or leave it with us on temporary loan. After the exhibition closes, we will be happy to return it to you. We can also discuss the possibility of creating a replica of your flag. Your participation in the project may be public or anonymous, whichever you prefer.
