— Where does the title “Retraumatisation” come from? “We Poles live with a strong historical sense of misfortune, because, geopolitically, Central Europe has never been an ideal place to live. In 2020, when Polish media actively covered the events following the Belarusian elections, I became more interested in the country’s history and realized that Belarus has no fewer reasons for trauma than Poland—perhaps even more, because the world easily forgets about it. Most importantly, history in this region repeats itself far too often. Hence the title Retraumatisation—traumas experienced anew,” explains the artist Veronika Wżosek.
The exhibition features interdisciplinary works combining graphics, installation, sculpture, textiles, and painting. The display is divided into two parts: the first focuses on general historical contexts, while the second reflects contemporary Belarus, especially after 2020. In her works, Wżosek draws on motifs from Baroque castrum doloris installations, Sarmatian funerary portraits, the 1863 uprising decorations, and is also inspired by the works of Zbylut Grzywacz, Jerzy “Jury” Zieliński, and Pablo Picasso.
Veronika Wżosek (b. 1994) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts named after Władysław Strzemiński in Łódź (departments of graphics, painting, and visual arts), as well as the Faculty of Material Technology and Textile Design at Łódź University of Technology. Her works have been exhibited in dozens of exhibitions in Poland and abroad. She is also the author of numerous publications in the field of art and design.
The exhibition will be open from November 21, 2024, at the Museum of Free Belarus (11 Foksal Street, Warsaw). The opening will take place at 19:00, and admission is free.
The media partner of the exhibition is the Belsat TV channel.
