The play “My Mother in Prison”, based on the book by Volha Vialichka, will be performed on February 22 at the Museum of Free Belarus in Warsaw. This was announced on the Telegram channel of the People’s Anti-Crisis Administration.
The performance is based on the memories of children of Belarusian and Soviet political prisoners. Psychologist Volha Vialichka, who works with children of political prisoners, began collecting their stories two years ago, documenting how they experienced this difficult period: first the home searches, then the detention of their parents, and their imprisonment.
“Children shared the dreams they had, the stories they invented to cope with trauma, and their hopes. Their experiences are compared with the histories of women and children repressed during the Soviet era in the ALZHIR camp (the Akmola camp for the wives of ‘traitors to the motherland’ in Kazakhstan, which existed until 1953). This is how the book From Two to Fifteen: My Mother in Prison came about,” writes the NAU.
Based on this book, former actors of the Hrodna Drama Theater, who were forced to leave Belarus after the events of 2020, together with colleagues from the Old Vilnius Theater, created the play. Children studying at the “Razam” Theater School, who also cannot return to Belarus, are part of the cast.
The director of the play is Natalia Lianova. This project is dedicated to everyone affected by repression.
Admission is by registration, with a suggested donation of 30 zlotys.
