Museum of Free Belarus Invites to the Exhibition of Polish Artist Weronika Wzosek “Retraumatisation”

The project was created in cooperation with the Belsat TV channel.

"Where does the title ‘Retraumatisation’ come from? We, Poles, live with a huge historical sense of misfortune because Central Europe, for geopolitical reasons, has never been a place where dreams come true. In 2020, when Polish media continuously reported on the events after the Belarusian elections, I began to be more interested in the history of this country and realized that in Belarus there are just as many reasons for trauma as in Poland, or even more, because the world easily forgets about it. And most importantly, in this part of the world, history repeats itself too often. Hence ‘Retraumatisation’ — traumas experienced again and again," says the author about her works.

The presented exhibition consists of interdisciplinary works covering graphics, installation, sculpture, textiles, and painting. It is divided into two parts: the first is about general history, and the second is about contemporary Belarus, especially after 2020.

The artist refers to motifs of Baroque installations known as ‘castrum doloris’, Sarmatian funeral portraits, or decorations of the 1863 uprising. She is also inspired by the works of Zbigniew Grzywacz, Jerzy Zieliński, and Pablo Picasso.

Weronika Wzosek (born 1994) is a graduate of the Department of Graphics and Painting and the Department of Visual Arts at the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, as well as the Department of Materials Technology and Textile Design at the Łódź University of Technology. Her works have been exhibited in dozens of exhibitions in Poland and abroad. Wzosek is the author of numerous publications in the field of art and design.

The exhibition is open from November 21, 2024, at the Museum of Free Belarus, ul. Foksal 11, Warsaw. Vernissage at 19:00. Free admission.
