What does war look like through the eyes of artists who find themselves close to the frontline? The exhibition Belarusians with Ukraine in Their Hearts, which opened on 31 October at the Free Belarus Museum in Warsaw, explores this question.
In November 2015, Belarusian artists from the Pahonia art community — Ales Pushkin, Hienadz Drazdou, Ales Tsyrkunou, Ales Susha and Andrei Takindang — travelled with Ukrainian artist Taras Nosar to the village of Pisky in the Donetsk region, near Donetsk and Donetsk Airport. At the time, the area was close to the frontline. During an art plein air, the artists created works in wartime conditions, documenting the reality unfolding around them.
Today, these paintings are not only works of art but also testimonies of a time when Belarusians expressed their support for Ukraine not only through words, but also through their physical presence.
The exhibition is complemented by a report on the plein air in Pisky and artefacts associated with that period, including personal belongings found in a destroyed school.
At the same time, the Free Belarus Museum has prepared an updated presentation of its Entry Point exhibition. The new collection of objects is dedicated to Belarusian volunteers fighting on Ukraine’s side. Through personal belongings and other artefacts, the museum continues to tell the stories of Belarusians for whom solidarity with Ukraine has become a personal choice and a commitment expressed through action.
