On 27 July 2026, Belarus marks the 35th anniversary of its independence. This date has been largely forgotten, as it was removed from Belarus's official state calendar in 1996. The Free Belarus Museum invites you to revisit the pivotal events of 1991, when Belarus declared its independence and began building the institutions of its new state.
The special guest of the event will be Lyavon Barshcheuski, one of the “Deputies of Independence,” who played an active role in these historic political processes.
The discussion will also feature Professor Viktar Shadurski, author of The Birth of the Belarusian Leviathan: Belarus from a Parliamentary Republic to an Authoritarian Regime (1990–1996).
The event will be moderated by Aliaksei Lastouski, Director of the Belarusian Institute of Public History.
