On 23 September at 18:30, the Free Belarus Museum will host a lecture entitled “Ivan, You Are Alive!”, dedicated to Ivan Luckievič — one of the pioneers of the Belarusian national movement, a publicist, archaeologist and one of the key figures in the Belarusian independence tradition.
This year marks the 145th anniversary of Ivan Luckievič’s birth, while this autumn marks 120 years since the publication of the first Belarusian newspapers, Naša Dola and Naša Niva, whose creation he was directly involved in.
The title of the lecture refers to the words “Ivan, You Are Alive!”, engraved on Ivan Luckievič’s cenotaph at the Rasos Cemetery in Vilnius. The words were written by his fiancée Juliana Menke, who left behind memories of their tragic love story. Ivan Luckievič died in Zakopane in 1919, literally in her arms. Unfortunately, his grave has not survived.
The lecture will also explore the contemporary commemoration of Ivan Luckievič and how his legacy can be preserved today.
The lecture will be given by Valeria Čarnamorcava, a Vilnius-based tour guide and master’s graduate in cultural heritage.
