In Belarus, people can face persecution for possessing the items that will be shown in this exhibition.
On June 9, the Museum of Free Belarus opens the exhibition “Depatriation”.
The term is rarely used, but it accurately describes the reality faced by Belarusians today. A reality in which the homeland can no longer protect its own symbols. A reality in which national symbols and protest artefacts are forced to leave the country in order to survive.
Over the past months, the museum team, together with people in Belarus, has worked to safely evacuate and preserve objects that today may become grounds for persecution.
At the exhibition, you will see items that accompanied people during protest marches and neighbourhood gatherings. Items hidden from searches. Items that preserve the memory of solidarity and resistance.
As part of the project, the museum has collected around 170 artefacts and several thousand photographs and video recordings. For security reasons, many of the stories presented in the exhibition will remain anonymous. But their voices will be heard.
